A cup of Galaxy - 3D animation
Personal Project
Goal: Assets modeling, assets animation, material animation
I wanted to challenge myself a little bit and learn some new thing.
One thing that I want to get a lot stronger with, is material and shaders so I decided to dedicate this project to test my understanding of how a material was build up and mostly how to manipulate it.
I had a limit of 20 hours on this project so all materials have been added from “Blender kit” and manipulated by me to give me the result I wanted. I hope in the future to be able to dedicate a project to make more complexed materials from scratch.
Made with Blender
My very simple storyboard before I started the project. I think I manage to follow it pretty well. :P
Before starting I did a small moodboard for the project. I was very drawn to the textured background and the models very obviously looking like a 3D model but almost realistic.
I used 'Procedual Material "Galaxy with Nabula"' that can be found in Blender Kit store as a base for the material animation. By twisting and turning the mapping settings I was able to make the galaxy look like it came from the tea bag. Had I had more time, I would have loved to experimenting with creating the galaxy material myself from scratch. You can also see how I more or less had my lighting setup and that I used a shadowbox to create a bit of weird shadow shapes in the scene.
During this time, I was trying to find the balance of the bottom of the cup. I later on made it bigger. Otherwise I felt like it looked like it was cliping with the floor. This was also before my final light set up and before I made the galazy material illuminate.
I had a plan to add both a bit of fog and a little bit of steam coming out of the cup. Unfortunetly I had a lot of issues with white stripes during rendering. As my deadline was coming to an end, I figure the fog and smoke was a nice to have and not a need to have. I hope one day I can get back to add the twos.
For the heck of it, I tried to place the cup in a different location and style. I like it, don't get me wrong, but it just doesn't give the vibe I was looking for.
Overall quiet happy with the result and how much I learned from this.
I hope to make something similare in the future, taking my new skills for a spin.
I thought I had saved a lot more progress pictures to show you, but honestly it was not on my mind while I was in full hyper focused mode on this project. - Safe to say I had a lot of fun!
